It was announced last month that Netflix was taking over the Riverdale spinoff from the CW. It’s intended to be a more horror-based take on the Sabrina the Teenage Witch concept. Now comes important news — they’ve cast the lead, and it’s a great choice. Kiernan Shipka — best-known as the daughter on Mad Men — will star as “Sabrina Spellman … described as an empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch who is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High.” The show will be a dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult, and witchcraft… in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist and finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.
