![]() As they’ve been doing recently, Oni Press is serializing the upcoming graphic novel Odd Schnozz and the Odd Squad through ComiXology ahead of release date. The full book will be out in late June, and this week chapter 2 (of 6) becomes available. It’s written by Jeffrey Burandt and illustrated by Dennis Culver, and it’s the story of a rock band, led by Liz, and all with cute nicknames, as shown here: They’re preparing to compete in a Battle of the Bands, but their punk ethos isn’t appreciated by other kids. Then the talking chimpanzee shows up, escaped from an underground research facility. In issue #2, the agents are pursuing the chimp, and the kids get in school trouble. Overall, in terms of the series so far, I’d rather have more with the band and less with the evil agents, since the latter scenes are much more like things I’ve already seen plenty of times elsewhere. I wanted to learn more about the teen characters, their interactions, and how they came together instead. This seems like it will be a fun romp, if not particularly memorable, and if I want a comic that focuses only on being in a band, I can get that elsewhere. There’s also a band soundtrack for sale, with a new track out each week. (The publisher provided digital review copies.) Update: Now that the series has concluded, it turned out to be mostly about the evil scientists and their modified animals and superpowers, very little about teens in a band, so definitely not a book for me.
