It’s an obvious idea, given the success of Gotham, going into its fourth season on Fox, but I’d completely forgotten that Syfy will be running Krypton next year. Like Gotham, which explores the famous setting before Batman became Batman, Krypton is set two generations (which they’re equating to 200 years) before Superman’s home planet blows up. Here’s the short Comic-Con teaser trailer:
Why, though? Gotham City is interesting, and there are tons of well-known characters who can be hinted at. Krypton is boring and sterile and features no one we know. And although I’m old and not up on the latest “stars”, it features no one I’ve ever heard of. Here’s the leading man and the plot description:
Only it’s a doomed quest, isn’t it? Which may be why, at the Comic-Con panel, Geoff Johns teased a lot more to the series.
Adam Strange and Hawkwoman will visit Krypton. The big villain is Brainiac, with Doomsday also appearing in the show.
Right they are! Also, it will exist in its own universe, so no CW crossovers. Which means at a time when there’s a Superman history show and a Supergirl show airing, they won’t have anything to do with each other. The pilot is written by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel) and Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time), who have the right credentials but have taken approaches to revisionist work that I haven’t cared for. Moot point, anyway, since I no longer pay for cable, so I’ll have plenty of time to watch for reviews before I seek out streaming or DVD versions.
