I guess Warner was pretty happy with how the Batman and Harley Quinn movie did, since Deadline is reporting that “26 episodes of [a] half-hour adult animated action-comedy series” titled Harley Quinn has been ordered to run on the upcoming DC digital subscription service.

The “adult” is worrisome, since that approach made the Batman movie so tacky, as is who’s behind this new cartoon: “Powerless executive producers Justin Halpern & Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey”. I was about to bring up that failed superhero sitcom as an example of how difficult it is to do comedy well in the costumed genre, but maybe they learned their lesson from not bringing the superpowered characters front and center of the show?

This series has, as its premise, a Harley Quinn who “finally has broken things off with the Joker once and for all and attempts to make it on her own as the criminal Queenpin of Gotham City.” Which will allow for “Poison Ivy and a whole cast of heroes and villains, old and new, from the DC Universe”.

They’re hoping to get Margot Robbie to voice the title character, since she played Harley so well in the otherwise unmemorable Suicide Squad movie, but she might be busy with her own spinoff plans.

Given the current environment, three guys running the character’s show may not play as well as if they got some female decision-makers. Women have taken to Harley’s character because she doesn’t take guff from anyone. I hope they can capture that appeal, instead of solely focusing on the guys who like seeing her in hot pants and pigtails.
