Lumberjanes #41 takes a little bit of a departure. Much of the series has focused on the campers encountering various supernatural or fantasy creatures, but this issue starts out with science, as shown in these preview pages. It’s written by Shannon Watters & Kat Leyh and illustrated by Ayme Sotuyo. Jo is building a time sensor array. Plus, we get a little insight into what she’s found valuable about her summer with her friends — a way to rediscover the joy of experimentation and discoveries without worrying about competition or future commitments. I love her passionate explanation of what she gets out of the process, and how exciting science is. It’s a good thing to see in a comic that normally plays with magic. Jen, the counselor, has some ideas of experiments the girls can try, with a paper airplane competition that gives Sotuyo room to draw expressions, diagrams (you can make your own airplane!), and some lovely panels of the various planes in flight as the scouts excitedly see how their designs work out. Cover by Kat Leyh This issue is a bit rambly, but that’s part of the charm. It’s all leading into a potential conflict for the group, as one young woman clearly hasn’t heard “be careful what you wish for”, particularly when forest spirits are involved. Even operating out of the best intentions — never wanting the summer to end — is not likely to end well when magic is involved.
